Dr. David McNear is an Associate Professor of Rhizosphere Science in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He teaches PLS366 Fundamentals of Soil Science each fall semester and leads the Rhizolab research group.
Dr. McNear's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Environmental Soil Chemistry from The University of Delaware (2005)
- M.S. in Environmental Pollution Control from The Pennsylvania State University (2001)
- B.S. in Environmental Resource Management from The Pennsylvania State University (1997)
- A.A. in Life Sciences from Harrisburg Area Community College (1995)
His research focuses on the complex biogeochemical processes occurring at the plant root-soil interface (rhizosphere) across multiple spatial scales. By integrating knowledge from microbial community structure and function, plant genetics and metabolomics, and soil chemical processes, Dr. McNear's work aims to address critical global challenges including climate change, food security, and ecosystem integrity. His research has significant implications for sustainable agriculture and environmental management.
Dr. McNear leads the Rhizolab, where his team conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of soil science, plant biology, and environmental chemistry. Through his teaching of Fundamentals of Soil Science, he educates future scientists and practitioners about the critical role of soil in environmental systems.
