David Mayernik serves as Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture in Rome, where he teaches design, drawing, and architectural theory. A globally recognized urban designer, architect, and artist, his work bridges scholarly research with practical application across multiple creative disciplines.
His research centers on Classical Architecture and Urban Design, with deep expertise in Renaissance/Baroque periods, Italian Art History, and Sustainable Urbanism. He integrates historical theory into contemporary practice, emphasizing Sacred Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and the cultural dimensions of built environments through courses like Roman Urbanism and Architecture I and Italian Classicism.
Major awards include:
- Fellowships from the American Academy in Rome and RSA
- Gabriel Prize for French research
- Arthur Ross Award (1987) and Palladio Award (2005)
- INTBAU Honourable Mention (2016) and Philippe Rotthier Prize (2014)

Professor Mayernik has taught at Notre Dame's Rome and South Bend campuses, the New York Academy of Art, and University of Virginia programs. His professional practice spans 23+ years as campus planner for TASIS schools in Switzerland and England, including master planning for their Portugal campus. As a painter specializing in buon fresco, he has created works for churches in Italy and Switzerland and designed sets for Chicago's Haymarket Opera.
