David M. Waisman is a Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Pathology at Dalhousie University, Canada. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Cancer Research and has been a department member since 2006. His research focuses on mechanisms of tumor growth, invasiveness, and metastasis, particularly investigating the role of S100A10 in regulating plasmin activity and macrophage migration to tumor sites. His work bridges cancer biology, proteolysis, and vascular biology.
Education: PhD from the University of Manitoba. Key research themes include S100A10-mediated tumor promotion, macrophage-tumor cell interactions, and the role of annexin A2 in fibrinolysis and cancer progression. His lab employs biochemical, cellular, and molecular approaches to understand cancer cell invasion and metastasis.
Scientific contributions include defining S100A10’s role in tumor growth, macrophage recruitment, and endothelial cell function. His studies highlight novel therapeutic targets for inhibiting cancer metastasis.
- Lab members: Alamelu Bharadwaj (Postdoc), Moamen Bydoun (PhD Candidate), Ludovic Durrieu (Postdoc)
- Key techniques: Mouse models of cancer, tumor imaging, plasminogen activation assays
- Major findings: S100A10 is critical for macrophage migration to tumors and regulates fibrinolysis in endothelial cells
Recent work emphasizes translating molecular insights into anti-cancer strategies targeting plasmin-dependent processes.
