Professor David Littlejohn is a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, leading the Faculty of Science. He has held senior roles including Dean (since 2014) and Associate Deputy Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange. His academic career spans over four decades, beginning with Chemistry studies at Strathclyde, followed by industry experience at ICI, and a return to academia as the Pye Foundation Lecturer in 1981.
Research interests include analytical chemistry, process analytics, and spectroscopy techniques (e.g., NIR, Raman, mass spectrometry). He has supervised over 50 PhD students and secured £18.5M in grants (PI: £7.5M; CI: £11M). Awards include Fellowships from the Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Industrial contributions include co-founding the Centre of Process Analytics and Control Technology (CPACT), which drives manufacturing excellence via in-process measurement technologies. He co-founded the APACT conference series and organized annual Process Spectroscopy courses. Recent activities include consultancy for Stratophase Ltd. and advisory roles in industry.
Teaching initiatives include multimedia tools for laboratory instruction and web-based learning resources in forensic and analytical chemistry. He has served on editorial boards, grant review panels, and national committees for chemistry societies.
