David Lantigua is an Associate Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Theology. He also serves as Co-Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism. Prof. Lantigua holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Notre Dame and has taught at The Catholic University of America. His research focuses on Spanish scholastic moral thought, colonialism, human rights, and Latin American theology. He has published extensively on topics like early modern Spanish contributions to international law and the defense of Indigenous rights.
Key works include Infidels and Empires (2020) and Bartolomé de las Casas and the Defense of Amerindian Rights (2020). His articles explore themes such as Indigenous cultural ethics, the legacy of scholastic moral theology, and the intersection of neoliberalism with liberation theology. Prof. Lantigua has received grants from the Louisville Institute and previously directed the Catholic Social Tradition minor at the Institute for Social Concerns.
