معرفی
David Landau is the Mason Ladd Professor and Associate Dean for International Programs at Florida State University College of Law. He is a prominent scholar in comparative constitutional law with extensive publications examining constitutional design, democratic erosion, and constitutional responses to political crises across multiple jurisdictions.
Landau's research focuses on comparative constitutional law, with particular expertise in constitutional design, abusive constitutionalism, judicial review, and democratic backsliding. His work examines how constitutional structures can either protect or undermine democracy, with case studies from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the United States. He has developed influential theories on 'abusive constitutionalism' - how democratic backsliding can occur through constitutional means - and has analyzed constitutional responses to democratic crises globally. His scholarship demonstrates sophisticated understanding of both structural constitutional design and the political dynamics that shape constitutional implementation.
His scholarly output shows a clear trend toward examining constitutional responses to democratic erosion and crisis, with increasing attention to US constitutional developments in recent years. Landau's work bridges theoretical constitutional scholarship with practical concerns about democratic resilience, often drawing comparative lessons across different constitutional systems. His research has evolved from traditional comparative constitutional analysis toward examining constitutional responses to democratic crisis, including analyses of the Dobbs decision, democratic disqualification, and emergency powers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Associate Dean for International Programs, Landau plays a significant role in shaping the international dimensions of legal education at Florida State University. His leadership extends to co-editing the annual Global Review of Constitutional Law, which has become an important resource for scholars and practitioners worldwide. He has also contributed to constitutional reform efforts, including serving on the Report to the Commission on Truth and Reconciliation of Honduras.
