David Kirby is the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of English at Florida State University, where he has taught since 1969. His academic career spans over five decades, emphasizing both creative writing instruction and scholarly research. He holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University.
His research interests focus on poetry, creative writing pedagogy, 19th- and 20th-century American literature, and music journalism. Kirby's work blends high and low cultural references, exploring themes like memory, identity, and societal critique through innovative narrative forms.
Notable publications include Little Richard: The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll (2009), a critically acclaimed biography, and poetry collections such as The House on Boulevard St. (2007)—a National Book Award finalist—and his 2021 works Help Me, Information and The Knowledge.
