David Kellen is an Associate Professor and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Psychology at the Department of Psychology within the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University. His research focuses on characterizing cognitive processes through mathematical models, with expertise in recognition memory, decision theory, and statistical methods. He holds editorial roles at journals like Psychological Review, Journal of Experimental Psychology, and Computational Brain and Behavior.
Education:
- Doctorate in Psychology, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (2011)
- Bachelor's and Master's in Psychology, University of Lisbon (2008)
Research Interests: Kellen develops and tests mathematical models of cognitive processes, particularly in recognition memory and decision-making. His work challenges traditional models like signal detection theory and explores Bayesian methods, mixed models, and behavioral decision tasks. Recent projects include the Extinction Gambling Task and critical testing of high-threshold hypotheses in memory.
Grants & Service:
- Lead PI on NSF CAREER grant (2022–2027) for recognition-memory modeling
- Co-I on IARPA grant (2017–2019) for collaborative decision analysis
- Serves on editorial boards, departmental committees, and conference organizing teams
Teaching: Courses include experimental design, statistical methods, human memory, and graduate seminars in cognitive psychology. He mentors through independent studies and directs the doctoral program in cognitive psychology.
