Harvey Marmurek is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. His research focuses on experimental studies of human information processing, including attention mechanisms, memory encoding/retrieval, gambling behavior analysis, and social cognition. He holds a BA from the University of Toronto (1969), MA (1972) and PhD (1975) from The Ohio State University.
Key research areas include repetition effects on memory, benefits of retrieval-enhanced learning, and the interplay of visual/verbal processes in face recognition. His work integrates cognitive psychology with applied studies on problem gambling severity, decision-making, and environmental influences in gambling contexts.
Recent publications (2020–2023) emphasize psychometric validation of gambling severity indices, cognitive models predicting gambling behaviors, and testing effects in educational settings. He has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles across cognitive psychology, addiction studies, and personality assessment.
Currently, Professor Marmurek is not accepting new graduate or experiential learning students. His research has been supported by grants focusing on gambling environments, cognitive biases, and university student gambling behaviors.
