Daniel McGrath is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary. He also serves as Associate Dean at the University of Calgary and holds research positions as a Senior Research Fellow at the Alberta Gambling Research Institute and as a Full Member at both the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
His educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from Dalhousie University (2013), a Master of Science in Marketing and Consumer Studies from the University of Guelph (2006), a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mount Allison University (2003), a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Cape Breton University (2001), and Business Technology studies in Marketing from New Brunswick Community Colleges (1999).
Professor McGrath's research focuses on behavioral addictions, particularly gambling disorder, with significant work examining the intersection between smoking and gambling behaviors. His work explores personality factors (particularly using the HEXACO model), attentional biases in gamblers, cognitive distortions related to gambling, and the impact of the gambling environment on behavior. He has conducted extensive research on gambling in Canada, including national surveys examining prevalence rates, demographic predictors, and the impact of events like the COVID-19 pandemic on gambling behaviors. His research also extends to behavioral finance topics including cryptocurrency, financial speculation, trading, and investing.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on understanding gambling motivations, cognitive processes in gambling behavior, the relationship between gambling and other addictive behaviors, and the development of evidence-based approaches to responsible gambling. His work frequently employs both experimental and survey methodologies, with a growing interest in digital gambling environments and their relationship to traditional gambling behaviors.

He teaches PSYC 305 History of Psychological Thought and welcomes applications from prospective graduate students interested in psychology (non-clinical) with research interests in behavioral finance, personality (HEXACO), and behavioral addictions. His work has been featured in prominent publications including Nicotine & Tobacco Research, Journal of Gambling Studies, and Addictive Behaviors, with recent attention to gambling during the pandemic and the relationship between social casino games and traditional gambling behaviors.
