Professor David James is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology of Education at Cardiff University, where he served until his retirement in September 2024. He holds prestigious fellowships, including those from the British Academy and the Royal Society of Arts, and has chaired major panels such as the UK Research Excellence Framework (2014–2023) and BERA’s Education Research Funding panel (2024–2025). His research focuses on governance, lifelong learning, social inequalities in education, and policy impact. Notably, he founded the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (2011–2019) and led evaluations of educational policies in Wales and internationally.
Education: James holds a BSc (First Class) in Sociology from Bristol University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and a PhD in Higher Education Assessment from the University of the West of England.
