Dr David J. Cox is a Reader in Criminal Justice History at the University of Wolverhampton, affiliated with the Criminology Department under the Faculty of Arts, Business, and Social Sciences. He specializes in early policing systems, notably the Bow Street 'Runners,' and bridges historical and contemporary criminological debates.
- PhD in Criminology from Lancaster University (2006)
- MA (Distinction) in Modern History from the Open University (2000)
- PGCE in Academic Practice from the University of Wolverhampton (2015)
- BA (2.1 Hons) in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Birmingham (1996)
His research spans policing history, Victorian-era prison governance, restorative justice, and local history. Recent work includes studies on WWI-era policing, 19th-century convict prisons, and the evolution of restorative justice.
Teaching roles include leading the MA in Comparative Criminology and modules on prisons, penal reform, and punishment & society. He previously held research roles at Keele and Plymouth Universities and served as Editor of a local history journal. Currently, he is President of Wordsley History Society, reflecting his commitment to community engagement.
