Barry Godfrey is a Professor of Social Justice at the University of Liverpool within the School of Law and Social Justice, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on comparative criminology, including international crime history, desistance studies, and longitudinal crime analysis. He has led major grants from AHRC, ESRC, and others, building a team studying digital histories and penal systems. He has supervised 20 doctoral students and advises on post-doctoral research.
Education: BA, MA, PhD from Keele University (1995–2011). Research interests include court culture, Liverpool history, and convict studies in Australia/US. Key grants include £1.3M for 'Digital Panopticon' (2013–2018) and recent projects on domestic abuse policing during the pandemic.
Publications include Young Criminal Lives (2017), Penal Servitude (2022), and 2023's Convict Transportation and Life-Course Offending. Recent work explores dark tourism in prison museums and digital coercive control strategies.
