Professor David Hook is a leading scholar in Medieval Hispanic Studies, currently serving as Faculty Research Fellow at the University of Oxford since 2011. Previously, he held chairs in Medieval Spanish Studies at King's College London and Hispanic Studies at the University of Bristol until 2010. His research focuses on manuscript studies, the history of the book, and textual criticism, with particular emphasis on Iberian medieval and early modern works. He has authored numerous articles on topics including the Cantar de Mio Cid, Sir Thomas Phillipps' manuscript collection, and the Constitución política de la monarquía española. His edited volumes include The Arthur of the Iberians (2015) and The Hispanic, Portuguese, and Latin American Manuscripts of Sir Thomas Phillipps (2017). A festschrift honoring his contributions, Text, Manuscript and Print in Medieval and Modern Iberia, was published in 2013 by the Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies.
Education: Completed his Oxford DPhil under Sir Peter Russell. Teaching: Provides consultation on manuscript studies and book history for research students at Oxford. Professional roles include editorship of several academic series and organizing international conferences such as the 2004 Spain of the Catholic Monarchs conference. His work frequently intersects with codicology, textual transmission, and transnational cultural exchange.
