Professor Geraldine Hazbun is a Professor of Medieval Spanish Literature at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, affiliated with St Anne's College. Her research focuses on medieval Iberian literature, particularly epic poetry (e.g., Poema de Mio Cid), clerical poetry, and the romancero tradition. She explores themes like risk representation, collective identity formation, and marginalized voices in literature. Supported by the Leverhulme Trust, her forthcoming book The Form of Risk in Medieval Spanish Epic examines how medieval epics address uncertainty and choice.
Her teaching spans a wide range of medieval Spanish literary texts for undergraduates, while her doctoral supervision has covered epic poetry, historiography, and women's writing. She has authored four books, including Reading Illegitimacy in Early Iberian Literature (2020) and Narratives of the Islamic Conquest from Medieval Spain (2015, honored as an 'Outstanding Academic Title').
Her work bridges medieval and early modern periods, addressing gender dynamics, travel narratives, and the erosion of chivalric ideals. She collaborates with institutions like the Magdalen Iberian Medieval Studies Seminar and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects on medieval travel writing and Hispanic chivalric romances.
