David Gius, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Radiation Oncology and serves as the Associate Director for Translational Research at the Mays Cancer Center, and Associate Dean for Research at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, UT Health San Antonio. His research focuses on the intersection of aging, cellular metabolism, and cancer, particularly in breast and lung cancers. He leads a laboratory at the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, where he investigates mechanisms governing mitochondrial proteins like Sirtuin-3 (SIRT3) and their role in tumor resistance and therapy response.
Dr. Gius was recruited from Northwestern University with a $6M CPRIT grant and holds three NCI grants. He has developed eight genetically modified mouse models to study human cancers and aims to translate findings into clinical trials. Key achievements include securing a UT System STARs Award for advanced equipment like scanning electron microscopes to study mitochondrial 3D structures. His work bridges cancer biology and aging research, with potential implications for personalized therapies.
Scientific recognition includes the CPRIT grant, NCI funding, and leadership roles in collaborative initiatives like the National Cancer Institute’s SPORE program. His clinical and research efforts emphasize translational medicine, aiming to improve patient outcomes through innovative oncology and longevity science.
