Professor David Garland is an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh and holds dual appointments as Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology at New York University. His work bridges legal studies, sociology, and criminology, focusing on comparative penal systems, welfare state theory, and policing regimes.
Education:
- LLB, Edinburgh University Law School (1977)
- PhD, Edinburgh University Law School (1984)
Research: His seminal works include Punishment and Welfare (1985), Punishment and Modern Society (1990), and The Culture of Control (2001). Current projects examine America’s policing-punishment nexus and the conceptual origins of the welfare state.
