Richard Sparks is a Professor of Criminology at the University of Edinburgh's School of Law and a member of the Global Justice Academy. He holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (BA, MPhil, PhD). His research focuses on penal policies and democratic politics, the sociology of punishment, public responses to crime, and criminological knowledge's role in policy. He co-directed the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (2006–2016) and was Head of the School of Law (2014–2017).
