David Garciandía Igal is a DPhil (PhD) candidate in Law at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law, concurrently serving as a Tutor in EU Law at Oriel and Hertford Colleges. His research focuses on the diffusion of EU human rights laws into Chinese legal frameworks, funded by the Government of Navarre. Supervised by Ngoc Son Bui and Iyiola Solanke, his thesis challenges perceptions of China’s legal insularity by examining both active EU initiatives and organic legal adaptations.
Education: MPhil in Politics and International Studies (University of Cambridge, Ramón Areces Scholarship); BBA and LLB (Public University of Navarre, recipient of the Extraordinary Prize for top GPA in Law). He has taught EU Law at SOAS, lectured at the University of Manchester, and worked with the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief.
Research Interests: EU Law, International Law, Comparative Law, with a focus on human rights, religious freedom, and China-West legal dynamics. Publications span peer-reviewed articles, a book chapter, and a book on topics like secular law, religious rights in China, and the Belt and Road Initiative.
Awards: Extraordinary Prize for top GPA in Law (University of Navarre). Professional Experience: Research roles at UN missions, Siemens Gamesa, and law firm Garrigues. Leadership: Convenor of the Oxford EU Law Discussion Group; Founder and former President of the Oxford University Spanish Society.
