David Forrest is Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of Sheffield's School of English. He joined as a Lecturer in 2012, became Senior Lecturer in 2016, and was promoted to Professor in 2021. Concurrently, he serves as Deputy Vice President for Education (Student Experience) since 2023, while maintaining teaching and research activities. His academic journey includes leadership roles such as Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching and University Director for Student Engagement.
Research Focus: Forrest's work examines realism, class, region, and sport in British film, television, and literature, with emphasis on:
- The intersection of landscape representation and lived experience
- Pedagogy and student engagement in higher education
- Audience reception of specialized cinema
- Northern English identity in cultural narratives
- Sport as artistic expression and class critique
His publications analyze trends in British social realism, regional cinema, and sport narratives. Recent work explores audience interpretation through mixed-methodologies, computational ontologies, and place-based knowledge exchange. Articles consistently engage with class dynamics, regional mythmaking, and the aesthetics of resistance.

Academic Leadership: Forrest supervises PhD projects on British realist cinema, regional representation, and television drama. He led major grants including the AHRC project 'Beyond the Multiplex' (2017-2021) on regional film audiences and the OFS/Research England-funded 'Transforming and Activating Places' (2020-2022), which facilitated 140 student work placements. He co-convenes the BAFTSS Special Interest Group on British Cinema and Television and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of British Cinema and Television.
