David Dorfman is Professor of Dance at Connecticut College since 2004 (promoted to full professor in 2008), where he also earned his M.F.A. in 1981. He serves as Artistic Director of David Dorfman Dance—permanently named company-in-residence at Connecticut College since Fall 2007. Currently on sabbatical for Fall 2025, his career bridges academic leadership and professional dance innovation.
Dorfman's research focuses on power dynamics, activism, and dissidence in performance, culminating in works like the evening-length dance/theater piece underground (premiered at BAM Next Wave Festival 2006). His choreography engages with sociopolitical themes through collaborative community projects and international commissions, reflecting his commitment to dance as critical inquiry.
Honored with prestigious awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and multiple NEA/NYFA fellowships, Dorfman's work spans major venues from BAM to The Joyce Theater. His company has commissioned works by institutions across the U.S. and Europe, notably winning a Barrymore Award for Green Violin.
