David Cowan is a Hallsworth Research Fellow at the University of Manchester, Department of History. His research focuses on modern British history, particularly economic inequalities, memory politics, and popular culture. He is currently working on a book about perceptions of wealth in Britain across the 20th century.
His research interests center on social and political history, with emphasis on how historical memory shapes contemporary politics. Key areas include class dynamics, welfare state development, and cultural representations of economic disparity.
Recent publications examine the cultural significance of the National Lottery, intersections of nostalgia and television, and evolving childcare practices in post-war Britain. His work consistently demonstrates how popular narratives about the past influence modern political discourse.
Cowan was recognized with the Duncan Tanner prize for outstanding scholarship in British political history.
