David Churchill is a Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds a PhD and MA in History from The Open University and the University of Cambridge, respectively. His research focuses on historical criminology, criminal justice history, policing, security industries, and Victorian urban history. Notable projects include studies on security commodities in modern Britain (AHRC-funded) and the historical development of public parks in Leeds. Churchill has received prestigious awards, including the Radzinowicz Prize (2016) and the Socio-Legal Studies Association Theory and History Prize (2019). He co-edits the Emerald Advances in Historical Criminology book series and serves as Academic Advisor to the Police History Society. His teaching spans study skills, policing, and crime prevention, with supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research.
Research interests include the security industry's evolution, Victorian crime control, and the socio-cultural impact of security technologies. He collaborates on projects like the Security Heritage Hub and has published widely on topics such as Victorian policing, crime prevention, and urban parks. Churchill advocates for integrating historical perspectives into contemporary criminology and security practices. His work bridges history and criminology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding crime and justice.
