Katja Franko is a Professor of Criminology at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo. Born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, she studied law at the University of Ljubljana and earned her PhD at the University of Oslo in 2003. Her research focuses on globalization, migration and border control, international police cooperation, sociology of knowledge, and the use of advanced ICT in criminal justice systems.

Her current project CRIMKNOW examines digitalization and private economies of knowledge in criminal justice. She previously led the ERC-funded project Crime Control in the Borderlands of Europe and collaborated on research about Frontex's border management practices.

- 2023: Thorsten Sellin & Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck Award (American Society of Criminology)
- 2015: Radzinowicz Prize (British Journal of Criminology) for 'Policing Humanitarian Borderlands'
- 2006: Hart Book Prize (Socio-Legal Studies Association) for 'Sentencing in the Age of Information'
Katja serves as Head of Teaching and Learning at her department and teaches courses like KRIM 2952/4952 and KRIM 4102. She co-founded the Routledge Studies in Criminal Justice, Borders and Citizenship series and is an associate editor for Theoretical Criminology and Crime Media Culture.
