David Buckley Borden

David Buckley Borden serves as Senior Advisor of Creative Practice and Innovation for the Center for the Future of Forests and Society (CFFS) within Oregon State University's College of Forestry, Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society. His interdisciplinary work bridges landscape architecture, environmental science, and creative practice to develop innovative science communication methods.

His research focuses on science communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-driven creativity through design-thinking frameworks. Borden specializes in creating environmental communication projects that translate complex ecological research into accessible public experiences through art installations, interpretive trails, and design-based interventions. His work explores how landscape architects can collaborate with scientists to foster cultural cohesion around ecological issues.

Borden was awarded the prestigious 2024-2025 Fellowship in Innovation and Leadership by the Landscape Architecture Foundation for his project "Emergent Mutualism: Closing the Science-Communication Gap through Collaboration between Ecology and Design." His research is supported by multiple institutions including the Fuller Initiative for Productive Landscapes at the University of Oregon, the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest LTER program, and Harvard Forest.

He has developed the Environmental Wayfinding System (EWS), a reimagined folk communication system serving as a graphic survival-code for people navigating environmental challenges.
