Prof. Klaus J. Puettmann is the Edmund Hayes Professor in Silviculture Alternatives at Oregon State University's Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society. He holds a Diploma in Forest Sciences from Albert-Ludwig University (1986) and a Ph.D. in Silviculture and Forest Modeling from Oregon State University (1990). Previously, he served as faculty at the University of Minnesota (1992–2000) and has held visiting roles as a DFG Mercator Guest Professor at the University of Freiburg and Charles Bullard Fellow at Harvard University. His research focuses on silviculture, forest ecology, and adaptive management in the context of global change.
Key interests include enhancing forest adaptive capacity through silvicultural practices, managing complex adaptive systems, and addressing ecological and societal challenges. He collaborates globally, publishes extensively (over 100 refereed articles and two books), and advises international funding agencies and journals. Notable awards include Fellowships from the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry and the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences.
Puettmann has mentored numerous students, including 20+ graduate researchers at Oregon State and the University of Minnesota. His work emphasizes sustainable forestry, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience, with contributions to large-scale experiments like the Density Management Study. Current projects explore how forests adapt to environmental changes and balance productivity with ecological functions.
