Michael Paul Nelson is a Professor of Environmental Ethics and Philosophy at Oregon State University's College of Forestry, serving as Director of the Center for the Future of Forests and Society and a Senior Fellow with the Spring Creek Project. He previously led the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest Long-Term Ecological Research Program (2012-2022) and held the Ruth H. Spaniol Chair in Renewable Resources.
His research focuses on integrating social and ecological systems, environmental ethics, and policy. Notable roles include leading a major LTER program and directing interdisciplinary initiatives addressing forest futures. He advises graduate students in philosophy and environmental studies.
Prior affiliations include OSU's Forest Ecosystems & Society department and collaborative work at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. His work bridges philosophy with applied ecological research, emphasizing moral courage in environmental decision-making.
