David Bentley is a Professor at the Department of English and Writing Studies, Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Western University. He holds the Carl F. Klinck Professorship in Canadian Literature and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of Arts.

His research focuses on Canadian literature and culture, 19th-century English literature and art (particularly Pre-Raphaelite poetry and painting), and interdisciplinary intersections of literature with science, philosophy, religion, politics, aesthetics, economics, and psychology. He explores literature’s relationship to the environment, morality, spirituality, architecture, memory, and imperialism. He founded the Canadian Poetry Project, serves as editor of Canadian Poetry: Studies, Documents, Reviews, and advocates for the role of Arts and Humanities in contemporary education.
Notable scientific awards include the Killam Prize for Humanities and the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. He is also recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of Arts.
David Bentley supervises graduate students in Canadian literature, Victorian literature and art, literature and architecture, literature and memory, and literature and ecology. He emphasizes the continuity of Canadian literature from the 17th century to the present and the interplay between literature and broader cultural forces.
