David B. Smith is a Tenured Professor in the Department of Entertainment Technology at the New York City College of Technology, City University of New York (CUNY). He serves as Artistic Director of the Center for Holistic Integration and holds leadership roles in two companies: Realtime Music Solutions, LLC (Founding Partner, Director of Creative Innovation) and Bianchi and Smith: Virtual Orchestras for the Performing Arts (President).
His research spans Sound, Music, and Media Technology with emphasis on Human-Machine Collaboration and AI as a creative partner rather than a tool. Current projects include developing a Universal Framework for Combinative Reality and the Balanced Blended Space initiative, which establishes communication pathways in blended realities through theoretical frameworks, syntax development, and engineered performance systems. His work integrates artistic creation with technological innovation across virtual orchestration and immersive environments.
Dr. Smith was selected as a BBK Fellow for designing open educational resources on AI integration in classroom settings. His innovations include three patents and two companies, with virtual orchestra systems achieving over 400,000 performances globally.
With ten years as Department Chair and eight years as Dean of the School of Professional Studies, he champions experiential education through production-based pedagogies and external partnerships. He mentors students via projects like the annual "Thunder Knocking on the Door" experiential learning initiative at City Tech and international collaborations such as presentations at Modul University in Vienna.
He directs the Center for Holistic Integration, which coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives including the CUNY Anti-Hate project "Shedding Light: A Celebration". His teams integrate artistic, technological, and educational domains through collaborations with institutions worldwide and corporate partners like Lucent Technologies.
