Herbert Smith serves as third trumpet with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and trumpet instructor for the Community Education Division at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He actively engages in music education through Young Audiences of America and as Rochester City School District Artist in Residence.
Smith graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1991, establishing his foundation in performance and pedagogy. His career bridges professional orchestral work with community-focused educational initiatives across upstate New York.
His primary research and performance interests center on Jazz as America's original art form, Classical Music accessibility for non-musicians, and global World Music Traditions. Smith emphasizes cross-cultural musical understanding through Composition and Arranging, particularly in educational contexts where he demonstrates how traditional structures inform contemporary practice.
Smith co-founded the smooth jazz ensemble Thornwood with guitarist Marcus Robinson, releasing the critically acclaimed album "Just A Little Sly" and preparing new material. He maintains an active performance schedule with his jazz quartet, substitutes for the Chautauqua and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras, and has collaborated with legends including Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, and Doc Severinsen.
Through his private trumpet studio and extensive workshop series, Smith mentors emerging musicians while promoting classical music accessibility. His educational approach integrates performance demonstrations with historical context, particularly highlighting jazz's evolution as a uniquely American contribution to global music culture.
