Mr. Dave Michels is a Researcher at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) within Queen Mary University of London’s School of Law. He joined CCLS in July 2017 as part of the Microsoft-funded Cloud Legal Project, focusing on legal aspects of cloud computing, including intellectual property, data protection, and privacy. He holds an LLB from the University of Amsterdam, an LLM in International Criminal Law from the University of Amsterdam, and an LLM in Intellectual Property Law from the London School of Economics.
Before academia, Michels worked at Ofcom (UK communications regulator) as an Associate in Strategy and Policy, analyzing technology trends and policy projects such as net neutrality and telecoms infrastructure separation. Earlier, he served at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, supporting Trial Chamber I on international law and human rights issues, including the Mladić trial.
His research emphasizes cutting-edge legal challenges in digital spaces, with notable publications on copyright reform and international criminal justice. He teaches modules on cloud contracts and cybersecurity regulation in the Cloud Computing Law specialization on Coursera, launched in 2022. His engagement includes public commentary on blockchain benefits and air transport regulations.
