Dave Little is a Professor of Aquatic Resources Development at the University of Stirling, with a focus on sustainable aquaculture and seafood systems. He contributes to postgraduate MSc programs like Sustainable Aquaculture, Aquatic Pathobiology, and Veterinary Studies, and coordinates advanced modules such as Livelihoods and Aquatic Resource Management using case studies for participatory research.
His research centers on improving aquaculture sustainability through metrics like nFifo (nutrient fish-in-fish-out) to track omega-3 efficiency, integrating tourism with aquaculture for economic and environmental benefits, and addressing global seafood market dynamics (e.g., China's salmon demand). He has developed educational materials for distance learning and leads projects in Bangladesh and Vietnam.
Recent articles highlight his work on declining omega-3 levels in farmed salmon, sustainable feed solutions, and the environmental trade-offs of marine ingredients. He also explores consumer perceptions of farmed seafood and strategies to reduce resource waste.
Little collaborates on EU Horizon 2020-funded projects like EATFISH and works with certification bodies (Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Best Aquaculture Practices) to refine sustainability metrics. His students include postdoctoral researcher Mausam Budhathoki.
