Darren Tunstall is Associate Professor and Programme Leader for MA Acting at the Guildford School of Acting (GSA), University of Surrey. He holds a PhD and MA Hons from Cambridge University and has extensive professional experience as an actor, director, and dramaturg in physical theatre and Shakespearean performance.
Research Interests: His primary research areas include Shakespeare, actor training, cognitive psychology, embodiment, and gesture in performance. He explores how movement and non-verbal communication influence social perception, particularly in relation to Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
Recent Research Trends: His recent publications reflect an interdisciplinary focus combining theatre, psychology, and biomechanics. Key themes include the perception of coordinated movement, the application of Lecoq-based actor training to Shakespeare, and the role of gesture in performance. This work bridges cognitive science and practical theatre training.

Advising and Grants: Darren supervises PhD students and leads teaching across multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in acting and theatre.
