Dean Darren Kew is a Professor at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, University of San Diego. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, along with a MALD in Law and Diplomacy and a BA in Government from the University of Notre Dame.
His research focuses on conflict resolution methods, particularly interfaith and inter-ethnic peacebuilding, and their impact on democratic development in Africa, Northern Ireland, and the United States. He emphasizes civil society’s role in fostering democracy and has advised international bodies like the United Nations, USAID, and the U.S. Institute of Peace. He co-facilitated a religious leaders’ working group in Belfast and contributed to Nigeria’s election system reform through an international commission.
His work has been published in International Negotiation, Journal of Democracy, and Current History, alongside his book on Nigerian politics and conflict resolution. He has monitored elections in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, advocating for electoral integrity.
Notable contributions include advising governments and NGOs on peace initiatives and co-chairing projects addressing religion and conflict. He actively engages in grassroots approaches to democracy promotion and early warning systems for conflict prevention.
