Darren Cusanovich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Arizona, with affiliations to the Asthma & Airway Disease Research Center (A2DRC) and the BIO5 Institute. His lab employs single-cell genomics technologies to investigate how the human genome regulates cellular diversity and how genetic/environmental factors contribute to complex diseases like asthma.
Education:
- B.S. in Music Business, Loyola University New Orleans (2002)
- Ph.D. in Human Genetics, University of Chicago (Yoav Gilad lab)
- Postdoctoral Research, University of Washington (Jay Shendure lab)
Research focuses on chromatin accessibility, gene-environment interactions, and developmental biology. The lab combines experimental and computational approaches to develop novel technologies like txci-ATAC-seq and Swab-Seq. Current work explores asthma pathogenesis, vascular disease heterogeneity, and synthetic gene regulatory networks.
Scientific Awards:
- UA Health Sciences Career Development Award (2020)
- NIGMS ESI MIRA R35 Grant (2020)
Darren advises graduate students in GPMM and CBIO programs and collaborates with researchers at institutions including UW and Loyola University. The lab operates in the Biosciences Research Labs (BSRL 421) with active community engagement through projects like SARS-CoV-2 surveillance.
