Prof. Danielle van den Heuvel is a Professor of Early Modern Economic and Social History at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History (Faculty of Humanities). She holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2007) and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Cambridge, including a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship. She has also taught at the University of Kent and served as an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam, directing the NWO VIDI Project on gender and urban space in Eurasia (2016–2023). She co-directed the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History (2019–2023) and led the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (2022–2024). She has held visiting fellowships at the University of Tokyo, University of Amsterdam, and Tokyo College.
Her research focuses on gender, urban space, food history, and early modern economic structures. Recent work includes analyzing street use in historical cities and applying digital tools like the 'Time Machine' for urban studies. She explores themes like guild regulations, women's economic roles, and urban development in Europe and Asia.
Her publications span books, edited volumes, and articles in journals like Journal of Urban History and Historical Journal. She has contributed to interdisciplinary projects on retail development, peddlers, and consumer culture. Her work bridges historical analysis with modern methodologies, emphasizing spatial and gendered dimensions of urban life.
Funding includes the NWO VIDI Grant and fellowships from the British Academy and NWO Rubicon. She collaborates internationally on projects like the 'Open Cities' initiative under Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) and Pathways to Sustainability (PtS).
