Dirk van den Heuvel is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, and Head of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre, a collaboration between TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment and Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. His research focuses on postwar modern architecture, urban planning, and related fields such as architecture theory, cultural studies, and discourse analysis. He has authored key publications like Habitat: Ecology Thinking in Architecture (2020) and Jaap Bakema and the Open Society (2018).
Van den Heuvel has held visiting roles, including a Visiting Research Fellowship at Monash University (2019) and a Richard Rogers Fellowship at Harvard GSD (2017). He has curated major exhibitions, including the Dutch pavilion at the 2014 Venice Biennale and shows at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Het Nieuwe Instituut. His editorial work includes roles with OASE, Footprint, and the Delft Architectural Studies on Housing series.
His research interests span Architecture History, Urban Planning, Welfare State studies, New Brutalism, and Dutch Structuralism. Awards include the Getty Library Research Grant (2023) and the Richard Rogers Fellowship (2017).
Van den Heuvel’s work bridges architectural theory, practice, and education. His current initiatives include the Architecture Archives of the Future research group, exploring the intersection of archives and pedagogy. Collaborations with institutions like Bureau Europa and Het Nieuwe Instituut highlight his commitment to public engagement and architectural discourse.
