Van den Heuvel's research critically examines intersections between political ideologies—particularly far-right movements—and environmentalism, focusing on human-nature relationships through frameworks of political ecology. Her master's thesis conducted a conceptual analysis of far-right ideology in this field, and she contributed to the seminal work "White Skin, Black Fuel: On the Dangers of Fossil Fascism" exploring climate change-far-right linkages. She co-organized the 2019 Political Ecologies of the Far-Right conference in Lund, establishing her expertise in this emerging research domain.
