Marguerite van den Berg

Dr. Marguerite van den Berg is an Associate Professor of Organization Science at Utrecht University School of Governance (USBO). Her research focuses on work precarization, gender studies, urban sociology, and improvisation in security practices. She leads the NWO-funded Vidi project, 'Improvising security: subsistence in contemporary urban Europe,' examining how urban dwellers in Rotterdam and Dublin navigate financial and social insecurity through improvisation.

She holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2013) and previously taught at the University of Amsterdam (2008–2022), Erasmus University Rotterdam, and held visiting positions at CUNY and Humboldt University Berlin. Her 2021 book Werk is geen oplossing critiques work-centric solutions to societal problems, arguing for systemic alternatives to precarity.

Her awards include the NWO Vidi Grant (2022) and a fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS, 2021). She actively engages in public discourse through lectures and media appearances on topics like gendered cities, welfare critique, and post-work imaginaries.
