Danielle Mages Amato serves as a Lecturer II in the Graduate Theater Program at the University of San Diego and concurrently holds the position of Director of New Plays and Dramaturgy at The Old Globe in San Diego.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Theatre and Drama from the University of California San Diego/University of California Irvine Joint Program
- MFA in Dramaturgy from the University of California San Diego
- BA in English and Radio/Television Production from the University of Houston
Amato's professional expertise centers on new play development and theatrical dramaturgy. She has overseen six consecutive years of the Powers New Voices Festival at The Old Globe, providing critical dramaturgical support for world premieres by acclaimed playwrights including Sam Hunter, JC Lee, Matthew Lopez, Itamar Moses, and Anna Ziegler. Her research interests encompass contemporary dramatic theory, literary management practices, and the intersection of dramaturgy with novel writing.
She maintains active leadership in her field as a past president and board member of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, and previously served four years as dramaturg and literary manager at Washington DC's Studio Theatre. Her creative output extends to prose through the HarperCollins-published novel The Hidden Memory of Objects.
Within the Graduate Theater Program, Amato mentors students through thesis development in course THEA-595, guiding emerging scholars in theatrical research and practice.
