Danielle Kinsey is a Professor of History at Carleton University, specializing in 19th-century British and imperial history, global commodity chains, and material culture. She holds a BA and MA from the University of Calgary and a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research explores transnational connections, mining history, and the intersection of trade, consumption, and imperialism.
She has taught courses on imperial and global history, earning awards such as the 2021 Favourite Faculty Member and 2020-21 FASS Teaching Development Award. Her current book project examines diamonds' cultural significance in 19th-century Britain and its empire.
Dr. Kinsey has supervised over a dozen MA theses on topics ranging from consumer culture in Victorian Britain to queer identity in South African history. She co-founded the Canadian Historical Association’s Teaching and Learning Blog and contributes to H-Material Culture as co-editor-in-chief.
Her publications span journals like Journal of British Studies and Nineteenth-Century Contexts, focusing on themes like diamond trade, colonial material culture, and the historiography of imperialism. She actively engages with public history through media appearances and museum collaborations.
