His work bridges social, cultural, and environmental history, with additional projects on Victorian-era Christmas traditions, secondhand trades, and urban nightlife.
Ferguson's publications and book chapters highlight interdisciplinary approaches, spanning topics like night reading practices, early environmentalism in London, and the intersections of class, migration, and imperial identity. His current project, Making Sense of the City, examines urbanization's societal impact during the 19th century.
