Daniele Monticelli

Daniele Monticelli is Professor at the University of Tartu, Estonia, where he chairs the Doctoral Studies Council of Humanities and heads the PhD programme in Studies of Cultures. Since 2003 he has been an active scholar and educator in Italian studies, philosophy of language, comparative literature and semiotics.

Research interests span an interdisciplinary spectrum: philosophy of language, translation theory, literary semiotics, Italian studies and contemporary critical theory. He focuses especially on the political thought of Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Antonio Negri, Jacques Rancière and Slavoj Žižek, while engaging post-structuralist frameworks to explore issues of power, identity and cultural mediation.

Recent publications (2020–2024) reveal a sustained engagement with translation history, censorship, biopolitics, multilingualism, ideology, and semiotic theory, often through the lens of Estonia’s cultural and political past. His work interrogates how translation practices under communism, Soviet censorship, and transnational reception shape collective memory and identity.

Teaching & supervision: Monticelli teaches courses in Italian Contemporary Society and Culture, Philosophy of Language, World Literature, and specialized seminars in literature, visual culture and film. He supervises BA, MA and PhD theses and is actively involved in doctoral training at the University of Tartu.

He leads the Studies of Cultures PhD programme and sits as Chair of the Doctoral Studies Council of Humanities, coordinating and mentoring a diverse cohort of early-career researchers across the humanities.
