Lorenzo Chiesa is a Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University (UK), co-convenor of the Faculty Research Group in Critical Theory and Practice, and Visiting Professor at the socio-political philosophy programme of the European University at St. Petersburg. He teaches courses on philosophy and psychoanalysis at the Freud Museum, London. Previously, he served as Professor of Modern European Thought and Director of the interfaculty Centre for Critical Thought at the University of Kent. He has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of New Mexico, Institute of Philosophy of Ljubljana, and American University of Beirut. He co-directed the Genoa School of Humanities, an independent Graduate School in Italy.
His research focuses on post-Kantian European philosophy, with special emphasis on Freudian/Lacanian theory, French and Italian bio-political thought, and Marxist theory. He has authored books such as Subjectivity and Otherness (2007), Italian Thought Today (2014), and The Virtual Point of Freedom (2016). He has edited/translated works by Agamben, Virno, and Žižek, and his work has been translated into over ten languages.
Current projects include a co-authored book on 'agnostic atheism' (with Adrian Johnston) and a study on bureaucracy analyzing the nexus of knowledge, enjoyment, and capitalism from psychoanalytic and Marxist perspectives. He edits the MIT Press book series Insubordinations.
