Russell Sbriglia is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English at Seton Hall University. His research focuses on American literature from 1776-1914, literary/critical theory, and intersections of literature with philosophy/psychoanalysis. He has edited major works including Subject Lessons (2020) and Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Literature... (2017), and is completing a monograph on Melville through a Lacanian lens.
Teaching specialties include American Romanticism, ideology critique, and psychoanalytic theory. Notable courses explore the American Renaissance, literature and psychoanalysis, and early African-American novels. He frequently collaborates with Slavoj Žižek, publishing co-authored works and organizing academic events featuring the philosopher.
Research interests span German Idealism (Kant/Hegel), Marxist critique, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and critical race studies. Current projects analyze Melville's engagement with German philosophy and anticipations of Lacanian concepts. His work bridges historical literary analysis with contemporary philosophical frameworks.
