Daniela Maura Maria Romano is a Full Professor of Horticulture and Floriculture (AGR/04) at the University of Catania's Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Di3A). She holds a degree in Agricultural Sciences (1983) and a PhD in 'Productivity of Cultivated Plants' (1990) from the University of Catania. Previously, she served as Associate Professor (2001–2022) and Researcher (1992–2001) at the same institution.
Her research focuses on plant-environment interactions, abiotic stress responses (e.g., salinity, water scarcity), biodiversity conservation, urban green space functionality, and sustainable ornamental plant production. Key areas include photosynthetic efficiency, postharvest physiology, and Mediterranean-adapted species.
Romano has led numerous research projects, including PRIN national initiatives and EU programs (e.g., Horizon 2020's BRESOV). She coordinates international academic networks as Chair of the ISHS Landscape Horticulture Working Group and former President of the Italian Horticultural Society's Ornamental Section. Editorial roles include Agronomy and Frontiers in Plant Science.
She has supervised 5 PhD theses and over 370 graduate theses. Current institutional roles include technical advisory positions for Italy's Ministry of Agriculture on ornamental plants and medicinal herbs.
