Daniel Tholen

Daniel Tholen is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Botany, Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. His research focuses on plant anatomy, physiology, and theoretical biology, particularly examining leaf structure-function relationships and biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions under environmental stressors like salt and drought.

He employs non-invasive microCT imaging during gas-exchange measurements to study plant physiology in four dimensions. His work has been presented at prestigious conferences such as the Gordon Research Conference on CO2 Assimilation and the European Geosciences Union General Assembly.

Tholen has supervised university theses and collaborated internationally, including a Visiting Professorship at the University of Tokyo (2017). He holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2000-2005) and prior academic experience at institutions in Japan, China, Austria, and the Netherlands.
