Daniel Scott

Daniel Scott, M.D., is a Professor and Assistant Dean of Simulation and Student Integration at UT Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Frank H. Kidd Jr., M.D., Distinguished Professorship in Surgery. He graduated from Southern Methodist University (Biomedical Engineering) and Louisiana State University School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society). His career includes residency in general surgery, a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery, and faculty roles at Tulane University and UT Southwestern since 2005. He directs the UT Southwestern Simulation Center, overseeing 25,000+ annual learner encounters, and leads the Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Scott specializes in medical education innovation, surgical simulation, and competency-based training. His research focuses on advancing minimally invasive techniques and bariatric surgery through simulation-based training and device development. He has authored 225+ publications, including landmark studies in surgical simulation.

He has secured grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for simulation and device research. As a national leader, he served as SAGES President, ASE member, and American Board of Surgery General Surgery Board member. His leadership includes roles as Vice Chair of Education and Director of the Simulation Center.

He pioneered programs at Tulane including Simulation and Training Laboratory, Laparoscopic Fellowship, Bariatric Surgery, and Robotic Surgery initiatives. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across departments at UT Southwestern.
