Dr. Cheguevara Afaneh, M.D., FACS is Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of GI Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine. He serves as Program Director of the Advanced GI and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and Director of the Cornell Comprehensive Hernia Center. With expertise in robotic surgery, he has performed over 4,000 robotic procedures and pioneered several robotic bariatric techniques in New York City, including the first Totally Robotic Liver Resection at NYP/Weill Cornell.
- M.D. from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science/The Chicago Medical School (2007)
- B.S. from the University of Miami (2003)
- Completed general surgery residency and surgical research fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center
- Advanced GI & Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center
Dr. Afaneh's research focuses on advancing robotic bariatric surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and gastrointestinal disorders. He specializes in robotic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and hernia repair, with particular interest in predicting and preventing complications like GERD after bariatric procedures. His work bridges cutting-edge surgical innovation with evidence-based practice to optimize patient outcomes in metabolic surgery and foregut disorders. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and authored numerous textbook chapters on bariatric and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Afaneh's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on comparative effectiveness of robotic versus laparoscopic approaches, predictive modeling for surgical outcomes, and addressing complications in metabolic surgery. His work spans technical innovations in hernia repair to developing protocols for managing post-bariatric complications, with significant contributions to understanding GERD development after sleeve gastrectomy and optimizing robotic surgical techniques.
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (2007)
- New York Times Super Doctor (2018-2020, 2024)
- New York Times Super Doctor Rising Star (2018-2020)
- Annual Faculty Teaching Award from Weill Cornell Department of Surgery (2017)
- Genzyme Fellow's Clinical Science Award (2010)
- NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Falcon Award (2011)
As Program Director of the Advanced GI and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship, Dr. Afaneh mentors surgical fellows in complex gastrointestinal procedures and has trained numerous surgeons across multiple specialties in robotic techniques. He serves on the Fellowship Council Admission Committee and several professional society committees including the ASMBS Flexible Endoscopy Committee and Clinical Issues Committee. His leadership in surgical education extends to developing innovative training protocols and serving as SAGES Champion for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Afaneh leads the Cornell Comprehensive Hernia Center and the robotic bariatric surgery program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, where his surgical team has expanded the frontiers of robotics in the Department of Surgery. He was instrumental in performing the first Totally Robotic Liver Resection at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College in 2016 and continues to pioneer new robotic applications in gastrointestinal surgery.
