Daniel R. Bednarek is a Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University at Buffalo's Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, with additional appointments in Neurosurgery, Biomedical Engineering, and Biophysical Sciences. He is a key research faculty member at the Canon Stroke and Vascular Research Center and serves as Radiation Equipment Safety Officer at Erie County Medical Center. His career spans over four decades in radiological physics, medical imaging, and radiation safety.
- PhD, Medical Physics, University of Chicago (1978)
- MS, Radiological Physics, University of Chicago (1973)
- BS, Physics, Canisius College (1969)
Dr. Bednarek specializes in radiological imaging physics, with research focused on region-of-interest (ROI) imaging, high-resolution real-time detectors, and real-time dose tracking systems for neurointerventional and cardiovascular procedures. His work aims to improve image quality while minimizing radiation exposure to patients and staff. He has pioneered the development of the Micro-Angiographic Fluoroscope (MAF) and related dose-reduction technologies. His research integrates engineering, physics, and clinical applications to advance interventional radiology.
The most recent publications reflect a strong trend in high-speed angiography, real-time dose mapping, scatter reduction, and advanced detector systems. These works emphasize innovation in imaging technology, patient and staff safety, and preclinical validation of neurovascular devices. Themes include high-resolution imaging, dose optimization, and hemodynamic analysis.
Dr. Bednarek has received numerous honors:
- ACR Fellow (2024)
- SPIE Fellow (2019)
- AAPM Fellow (1999)
- ABR Lifetime Service Award
- Multiple Cum Laude and Merit Awards for Scientific Excellence
He has been a principal or co-principal investigator on multiple NIH and industry-funded grants, including projects with Canon Medical Systems on high-speed angiography and dose management. He has also advised on accreditation and examination standards through AAPM and ABR. Dr. Bednarek founded and curates the UB Museum of Radiology and Medical Physics, contributing to the education and preservation of medical physics history.
His work is closely tied to the Canon Stroke and Vascular Research Center, where he leads research in imaging innovation and radiation safety. He collaborates extensively with Dr. Stephen Rudin and other experts in neurointerventional radiology and biomedical engineering.
